Mauritania is a small Islamic state located in West Africa. The population mainly consists of Berbers (indigenous people), as well as people from African countries. Moorish names are a mixture of Arabic, Persian, Islamic and African names. Quite often among the locals there are people with French names and surnames. This is explained by the fact that for a long time Mauritania and neighboring countries were French colonies.
