Icelanders are a small European people, leading their ancestry from the Vikings. Icelanders are distinguished by their tall stature, excellent health and unique Icelandic names, also originating in the Viking Age. With rare exceptions, Icelanders do not have surnames, only personal names and patronymics, which are created by adding the ending "son" (for men) or "dottir" (for women) to the paternal name. In recent years, it has become fashionable in Iceland to use the names of mothers instead of fathers as patronymics. However, despite the efforts of feminists, this tradition has not become widespread.
