Malagasy - the indigenous population of Madagascar, Comoros and Seychelles. All over the world they are known for their original naming traditions. Malagasy use three types of names. At birth, the child receives a temporary name, reminiscent of an offensive nickname. For example, Betai (Stinker) or Vualau (Rat).

At the age of 12, the name changes to a permanent one, this name is already chosen not by the parents, but by the shamans of the tribe. Permanent names are usually long meaningful sentences. It is no coincidence that the world record for the longest name belongs to the Malagasy. A significant part of the islanders use French or Islamic names along with Malagasy names. Surnames are mostly French.
