Bosnia and Herzegovina is a multinational European state with a population of 4 million people. Half of the country's population are Bosniaks, the other half are ethnic Serbs and Croats. Bosnian names were formed under the influence of Islamic and East Slavic traditions, since for four centuries the territory of modern Bosnia and Herzegovina was under the control of the Ottoman Empire. Due to the strong influence of Islam, the most common names in the country are those of either Arabic or Turkic origin. The surnames of Bosnians most often look like traditional Islamic names, to which the ending "ovich" was added. For example, Izetbegovic, Ahmedovic, Ibrahimovic.
