Myanmar (Burma) is a medium-sized state that borders China, India and Thailand. The Burmese use an archaic naming system, in which there was no place for patronymics or even surnames. Burmese names (or Myanmar names) are complex 3-4 word constructions that can include parental names, honorific nicknames, and even job titles. The confusion in this system is also dominated by the fact that the inhabitants of Burma can independently change their names at any time, usually a name change reflects changes in their family or social status.
