The Saami (Laplanders) are one of the small, indigenous peoples of Europe, belonging to the Finno-Ugric group. The Saami live in a historical region that includes part of Sweden, part of Finland and the entire Kola Peninsula. Sami names (they are also Lapland names) are divided into two groups. The first is the original names, created from the words of the Sami languages. The second is the converted Swedish, Russian, Finnish and Norwegian names. For example, the name Gregory among the Saami turned into Ryg, and Lena into Olenk.
